386 - Whatever

I have posted many time about diabetes and how it effects me and I want to get this on record. I have said that I do not sho any symptoms of love blood sugar ... a blood sugar that should put most diabetics in a car or ambulance and on their way to the hospital and unconscious ... but I am different. It's 9:30 on Saturday night and I normally have to take a blood test at this time and take some of my medications around this time ... Risperdal, Zocor and Effexor. I take the blood test and 2 units of Novo Rapid (to lower my blood sugar after dinner).

I didn't take the Novo Rapid because my blood sugar is at 1.7 and in the other scale that is 30.6. As I type this I am eating some chocolate covered cookies. Yes, I should be drinking some juice to get it back up very quickly but i want to temporarily keep it low so that I can finish this post in a low blood sugar state of mind just to show everybody that they should not pooh-pooh me when I say that I am not really having symptoms.

Thank you and now I will go have some juice.

6 Notes to Me:

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I can go so low that I should be unconscious and I don't even realize it. I function pretty normally down to about 35, then I start appearing different to those around me. Hypoglycaemia unawareness. It can be bad, because even if we feel and appear normal, reaction times can be slowed so it's bad to drive.

OH my gosh... hey, symptoms or not diabetes is nothing to flit away. I once took care of a gentleman who had his blood sugar at 1.5 and he was chatting away and perfectly fine as I freaked out and called the doctor and ordered him to chug that orange juice NOW mister!

But he was perfectly ok... no symptoms to tell us otherwise.

PS; do feel better George :)

Do take care, George. I have seen a friend, diagnosed in the last 4 years or so, who wouldn't take it seriously for a long while. He was hospitalized several times, frightening. Harder on his family and friends than him, I think.

ps I know you do and this was to prove a point. I just wish my friend was as aware and careful as you are. I haven't seen him now for about a year so I hope he's doing better.

Hi Bunny ... when I have to drive for over an hour I check my blood before I leave. If it a several hour drive I stop and check it a couple of times along the way. I also sip from a water/juice mixture ... I would rather have it high then low when driving

Hey Carrie ... you can see the effects from the other side of the coin.

Try living alone when you are as brittle as I am ... it frightens me. I felt great and had some juice as soon as I finished the post.

Hi Peter ... it has become so routine for me that I take what has to be done (injections, blood tests, diet) is a regular part of my daily life. When I was in the hospital a couple of years ago I was like the guy Carrie described ... I was at 1.7 I think and I was cool, calm and unexcited by it yet the nurses were having panic attacks. I tried to reassue them but the have a routine to follow.

I do hope your friend is better with it now ... those that I have met that don't take it seriously at the start are the ones that get the terrible complications.
